Eleanor Took the Long Way to Pluto
Eleanor and June promised each other Pluto on their twenty-fifth anniversary. It took until the fiftieth to actually go — partly the cost, partly the nine-year flight, mostly the way life keeps happening. They bundled into heated suits and stepped out onto the Tombaugh Heart Snow Walk anyway.
The glacier is shaped, improbably, like a heart, and at -230°C it glitters under a sky so crowded with stars it looks staged. Their guide handed over two lanterns and a thermos of cocoa, then tactfully walked ahead. The two of them crossed the ice slowly, holding gloved hands like it was a first date.
No view on Earth earns a fifty-year wait. This one, June decided, came close — and unlike most anniversaries, came with real bragging rights.
